Knitting the Cuff
  • Cast on 60 stitches and divide onto double-point needles so there are 14 stitches on Needle 1, 15 stitches on Needles 2 and 3, and 16 stitches on Needle 4. Join into a round, being careful not to twist the stitches.
  • Work Kl, PI rib for 6 rounds.
Knitting the Heel Flap
  • Working with 31 heel stitches on Needles 3 and 4 only, turn so wrong side is facing and slip all stitches onto one needle.
  • Row 1 (WS): Slip 1 purlwise, P30.
  • Row 2: *Slip 1 purlwise wyib, Kl; repeat from * to last stitch, Kl.
  • Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until piece measures 2!^’76.5 cm from rib, ending with a right-side row.
Turning the Heel
  • Row 1 (WS): Slip 1, P15, P2tog, PI, turn.
  • Row 2: Slip 1, K2, ssk, Kl, turn.
  • Row 3: Slip 1, P3, P2tog, PI, turn/
  • Row 4: Slip 1, K4, ssk, Kl, turn.
  • Continue in this manner, working 1 more stitch before the decrease on every row, until all stitches have been worked, ending with a right-side row. You now have 17 stitches.
Knitting the Gussets
  • With right side facing and using needle that holds the heel stitches (Needle 1), pick up and knit (see page 280) 20 stitches along side of heel flap. Knit 29 held instep stitches onto Needle 2. With Needle 3, pick up and knit 20 stitches along other side of heel flap, K8 from Needle 1. You now have 86 stitches arranged as follows:
  • Needle 1: 29 stitches
  • Needle 2: 29 stitches
  • Needle 3: 28 stitches
  • Place marker for beginning of round.
  • Round 1:
  • Needle 1: Knit to last 3 stitches, K2tog, Kl.
  • Needle 2: Work Round 1 of Lace pattern Summer.
  • Needle 3: Kl, ssk, knit to end of round.
  • Round 2:
  • Needle 1: Knit.
  • Needle 2: Work the next round of Summer Lace pattern as established.
  • Needle 3: Knit.
  • Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 working patterns as established until 60 stitches remain.
Knitting the Foot
  • Continue working the sole in stockinette stitch and the instep Summer in Lace pattern as established until foot measures lVi74 inches less than desired finished length, ending with Round 8 of Summer Lace pattern. Move 1 stitch from Needle 1 (sole) to Needle 2 (instep).
  • Needle 1: 15 stitches
  • Needle 2: 30 stitches
  • Needle 3: 15 stitches
